Removing Tank

There are various reasons why you may need to remove the gas tank. Carb adjustments.. painting.. who knows what.

One of the more irritating parts of the process, is disconnecting all the stuff attached to the bottom of it. So here is a quickie help with that.

  • Step 0: Remove the seat as usual.
  • Step 1: Remove the two #12 bolts on each SIDE of the frame, near the rider side of the tank.
  • Step 2: Lift from the rider side, and slide it down a bit, to allow it to detach from the little open joint near the handlebars
  • Step 3: PROP IT UP, to access and turn off the petcock in the next step.

One way of doing it is:

However, other folks like doing it from the other end

  • Step 4: Turn off tank petcock. that's the little flat-screw turnie thing you might barely see from the above pic.
Note that you must approach it from the right side of the bike, as shown in the pic.
  • Step 5: Mark, then detach, the two "wet" (filled with fuel) lines coming out of the tank petcock. BE SURE TO KNOW WHICH IS WHICH! Attaching them in reverse order, would be "bad"

ANd note that they will spill fuel, so have something handy to drain them out or something.

Use a pair of pliers to slide down the hose clamps, before attempting to remove the hoses.

  • Step 6: Remove the one (or two, if you're in california) dry smaller lines.
